DMT Cloud, Aerosol, and Precipitation Spectrometer with Polarization Detection (CAPS)

The CAPS is a combination of an optical particle spectrometer (named CAS), a shadow imager (named CIP), and a Hotwire LWC instrument.

The CAS part operates with a laser at 658nm and collects light scattered by individual particles to an angular range from 4° to 12° (forward detector) and to the angular range from 168° to 176° (polarization-sensitive backward detectors). The CAS is sensitive to particles in the diameter range from 0.5µm to 50µm. The polarization of the backscattered light gives an indication for the particle shape.

The CIP part uses light with a wavelength of 658nm and detects particle shadows with an array of 64 optical diodes. The size range from ~20µm to ~1mm is covered.

The hotwire part measures the power required to keep a coil at a constant temperature of 125°C. From the required power the liquid water content can be estimated.

DMT Ultra High Sensitivity Aerosol Spectrometer (UHSAS)

The UHSAS is an optical-scattering spectrometer for sizing aerosol particles in the 0.06 – 1 μm range. The instrument counts particles in up to 100 user-specified sizing bins, with a resolution as fine as 1 nm/bin. This high sensitivity makes the UHSAS ideal for aerosol research and filter testing.

TSI/Grimm Condensation Particle Counter (CPC)

Several CPCs count and detect aerosol particles by first enlarging them using a condensation process.
The aerosol particles act as nucleation centers where supersaturated gas from a working fluid (water or alcohol, depending on the instrument) condenses on the particles to form droplets that grow to a detectable size.

TSI Optical Particle Sizer (OPS)

The Optical Particle Sizer (OPS) Model 3330 is a light, portable spectrometer that provides fast and accurate measurement of particle concentration and particle size distribution using single particle counting technology. The OPS measures particles from 0.3 to 10 µm in 16 user adjustable size channels. Sometimes the OPS is placed in TSI's weatherproof Environmental Enclosure where it is to note that the measured particles can also be collected on a built-in filter for further analysis. Battery powered for up to 20 hours and with a large color touchscreen, the OPS is used in a wide variety of applications, ranging from filter testing to industrial measurements, as well as both indoor and outdoor monitoring.
