The Atmospheric Aerosol Observatory University of Vienna – a new super-site for urban background aerosol observations

The University of Vienna’s Aerosol and Environmental Physics group at the Faculty of Physics is in the process of refurbishing their previous “Tower Laboratory” into an important component of national and international scientific importance. The newly built Atmospheric Aerosol Observatory will serve as a measurement platform for observations of microphysical, chemical, and optical aerosol properties as well as meteorological parameters in the urban environment of Vienna. The new super-site will collect important data for answering central questions about climate change. Together with the high-alpine Sonnblick Observatory in the Austrian Central Alps, the new observatory will be part of the pan-European research infrastructure ACTRIS (Aerosol, Clouds and Trace gases Research Infrastructure) serving as National Facilities for aerosol in situ measurements.

Finalization of the construction work is expected in 2022/2023, and the ACTRIS site is expected to be operational in 2023/2024.
